Luiss Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali Guido Carli is an international institution that is widely recognised for her four Departments: Economics and Finance, Business and Management, Law, and Political Science. This is known too for its privileged relationship with the business world. Luiss School of Journalism is an essential part of this alma mater. This has an innovative teaching and research programme, which focuses on journalism and its relationship with the new technologies. Currently, Luiss School of Journalism and its scientific partner Luiss Data Lab are under the direction of Gianni Riotta. These educational centers are aimed at supporting, coordinating and guiding diverse research projects that fight against the online and social disinformation. One of these initiatives is MediaFutures, Data-driven innovation hub for the media value chain”. A project, submitted by a consortium including Luiss that received funding for nearly €5 million euro. Falling under the EU Program for funding research and innovation, Horizon 2020, the project is centered on “DT-ICT-05-2020 Big Data Innovation Hubs”. The aim is establishing a data-driven innovation hub to offer grant funding and support for startups and artists, with a civic orientation.
One of the Luiss research activities for MediaFutures, it will be the Luiss School Journalism open day a moment to spread awareness as well as highlighting the importance of supporting various forms of the fight against disinformation and debunking false news. The event will take place on 3rd February 2021, when the school will open its doors, virtually. Students and lecturers will give citizens first-hand information about their personal experiences with the Luiss study programme. After that, the panelists will answer some practical questions. The objective of this meeting, which will bring together experts of diverse fields of study, will be to create an open dialogue about the close relationship between the phenomenon of disinformation and the covid, in the context of the current pandemic.
In the same month, we will be honoured to receive Paolo Gentiloni, Italian politician serving as European Commissioner for Economy and an ex-Prime Minister of Italy. The event will be called Rebuilding Trust, Gentiloni and Gianni Riotta will have an open debate on streaming, that may be followed for free on our various social media. Also for this event Luiss School of Journalism will organise an expert round table with Luiss academics and other special guests among them Vittoria Colizza, Research Director EPIcx; Maurizio Molinari, Editor in Chief La Repubblica; Costanza Sciubba, Special Editor Commentaries from Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) Misinformation Review; Alec Ross, Technology Policy Expert and ex Senior Advisor for Innovation to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama; Jhumpa Lahiri, Author and Professor at Princeton University and others.
On the other hand, Luiss is working on the organization of a series of workshops, Media Literacy, training sessions and conferences that are directed to a young audience: high school public. The main objective is intended to encourage them to create a critical vision of society and inquire using adequate sources of information. Luiss will present to them some of its big data research tools, as well as, its practical applications.
