The Migrants’ Map

The Migrant Map is a Data & Geo Storytelling project developed by Luiss Data Lab in collaboration with Catchy, Alkemy Lab, and Kode srl, with the aim of visually and spatially narrating data, stories, and faces of migrants involved in the tragedies of recent years. To implement the project, open data from the Missing Migrants portal on sea deaths from December 2013 were collected, analyzed, and processed.

The data were geographically distributed on a Geo Intelligence map that considers the main migratory routes of the Central Mediterranean, Western Mediterranean, and Eastern Mediterranean. The collected and processed data for each route were accompanied by individual stories with a strong journalistic impact, accompanied by emotional photos provided by Oxfam Italia and Medici Senza Frontiere. The map allows filtering datasets and narratives for the specific migratory route, for a certain time period, and distinguishing between adult and child deaths. The migrant map can be viewed at the following link: http://migranti.catchy.buzz/.

From a technological perspective, data processing relies on the open dataset from Missing Migrants and the services of Geo Visualization Open Street Map and Mapbox. The project uses modern Geo Visualization and Geo Intelligence technologies to describe and visualize the data accurately and effectively. The migrant map seamlessly integrates into Luiss Data Lab's research lines, addressing a key theme in the Italian and international socio-political debate, serving as an informative and educational tool.
